Product of the Year: Optimisation and Implementation
Winner:
TATA Consultancy Services
Clever Energy
TATA Consultancy Services (TCS) won edie’s Product of the Year: Optimisation and Implementation Award for Clever Energy, an AI-powered digital platform that helps enterprises accelerate their transition to net-zero by turning traditional energy management into a predictive, data-driven capability.
The challenge
Organisations worldwide lack visibility, control and intelligence in managing energy across complex, distributed operations. Energy-intensive assets such as HVAC systems, refrigeration units and industrial equipment often operate inefficiently because of fragmented data, reactive maintenance practices and inconsistent operating standards.
The result is unnecessary energy consumption, higher emissions and rising operational costs.
The solution
Clever Energy integrates cloud analytics, machine learning and digital twins to provide a unified, enterprise-wide view of energy consumption and asset performance, in real time. This allows organisations to identify inefficiencies, optimise usage and track progress against sustainability targets.
The platform is designed to accelerate decarbonisation without major capital investment. By using existing infrastructure and integrating with building management systems and IoT devices, it maximises the value of legacy assets. It also provides reliable, verifiable data to support decision-making, reporting and compliance, aligning leadership, operations, finance and sustainability teams and positioning sustainability as a strategic lever for growth rather than a regulatory obligation.
How the project works
At the core of the platform are Energy Digital Twins: dynamic, physics-based models enhanced by machine learning that simulate asset behaviour, predict inefficiencies and recommend corrective actions in real time. The platform draws on data from building management systems, IoT sensors, weather data and operational inputs, and this interoperability allows it to be deployed across varied environments without extensive system upgrades.
A centralised command centre combines AI-driven insights with human expertise, with energy specialists and data scientists continuously monitoring performance, validating recommendations and guiding implementation. The cloud-based architecture allows rapid scaling across thousands of sites, and the platform learns over time, so optimisation becomes more precise with continued use.
Clever Energy also uses an outcome-based commercial model, in which fees can be linked to verified energy savings – reducing financial risk for clients and reinforcing accountability for measurable results.
The results
Organisations using the platform typically achieve energy intensity reductions of 8-12%, supporting progress towards science-based targets and net-zero commitments.
Global convenience retailer Circle K used Clever Energy to optimise energy use across its store network, achieving energy cost savings of $7.3m, a 3% normalised energy reduction and the avoidance of 17,646 tonnes of CO2e – while maintaining operational continuity.
Beyond financial and environmental benefits, predictive maintenance and optimised operation improve asset performance and lifespan, reducing unplanned downtime and minimising waste from inefficient equipment use. The platform also drives cultural change by increasing energy awareness and enabling data-driven decision-making, with standardised processes and real-time insights improving governance and consistency across large portfolios.

E60+
E60+ analyses building management system, national metering and Internet of Things data using machine learning to find inefficiencies in complex estates, then issues step-by-step recommendations with the expected cost and carbon impact of each, checked against comfort requirements. It was built because organisations increasingly collect building data but struggle to convert it into savings. Typical interventions include correcting out-of-hours operation, improving fan coil unit controls, replacing faulty sensors and adding movement detection. At Brunel House, the pilot estate, energy use is down 24.2% year on year with out-of-hours consumption down 41.5%.
DigiProd Pass
Build your Own DPP
DigiProd Pass Ltd has built a platform for creating digital product passports, the verified product records that EU regulation will require across an estimated 30 product categories, with battery passports mandatory from February 2027. It consolidates material composition, carbon footprint, compliance records and lifecycle information into a structured repository accessible via QR code, RFID or interface, integrating with existing enterprise resource planning and product lifecycle systems rather than replacing them. It is already applied in batteries, automotive, textiles, furniture, footwear and plastics, and is validated through four EU-funded projects including work on a consolidated passport for the Fiat 500e powertrain.
E.ON Next
Next Optimise
Next Optimise pairs a dynamic tariff tracking wholesale electricity prices with automation that decides when a household should charge its battery, use stored solar power or export to the grid. Built with Amber Electric using technology already running in 80,000 Australian homes, it addresses the problem that only around 9% of consumers are on time-of-use tariffs and a third say shifting usage is too much trouble, leaving solar and battery owners unable to capture the value of their equipment. In a pilot, all 175 participating households saw bills fall, averaging £18 a month and reaching £97 for some.
Recirculate Systems
Recirculate Systems
Recirculate Systems links reusable packaging to card payments so deposits are taken and refunded automatically through infrastructure customers already use, removing the apps, QR codes, customer accounts and manual refunds that most reuse schemes depend on. The company's argument is that reuse rarely scales beyond already-committed consumers because of that friction, and that making reuse operationally identical to single use is the precondition for mass adoption. It is aimed at hospitality, sports venues, retail and transport, ahead of EU packaging regulation that mandates increases in reusable packaging. The company reports thousands of live transactions and 100% cup return rates during stadium deployments.
ScottishPower
EV Optimise: Intelligent Charging for a Flexible, Net-Zero Future
EV Optimise lets ScottishPower customers set a target charge level and time in the app and then hands control of when charging happens to the supplier, which shifts it to periods of low demand and charges a flat 8p per kWh at any hour. Customers accrue bill credit for each hour of flexible charging with no cap. It requires no additional hardware or installation, working with 297 vehicle models across 28 brands provided the customer has a smart meter. Since launching in late 2024 it has enrolled over 6,200 customers, completed 396,000 charging sessions and shifted 9GWh away from peak periods.
