AI in Energy Award

Winner:

Kaluza – Energy Intelligence Platform

Kaluza won edie’s AI in Energy Award for its Energy Intelligence Platform, an AI-native software layer that coordinates customers, devices, markets and the grid in real time, turning fragmented signals from meters, EVs, batteries and heat pumps into coordinated action.

The challenge

Energy retailers and grid operators face a structural problem: the grid was built for a world of centralised, predictable generation that no longer exists. EVs, heat pumps, batteries and dynamic tariffs are multiplying faster than legacy systems can process, resulting in rising costs, operational fragility and a decarbonisation programme that is moving too slowly.

At the same time, energy retailers globally are under pressure to reduce cost-to-serve, launch low-carbon propositions faster and extract value from the device data their customers are generating – something legacy systems cannot do.

The solution

Rather than applying AI to one slice of the problem, Kaluza built a unified intelligence layer spanning customer data, device data, market data and billing. Built from the ground up as a data and intelligence engine, the platform embeds AI across billing, customer operations and energy optimisation – predicting demand, automating customer service, optimising flexible load and balancing the grid in seconds.

The platform is deployed by enterprise energy retailers and utilities including OVO Energy, ENGIE and AGL, and manages over 26 million contracted meters globally.

How the project works

Kaluza streamlines energy and decarbonisation in three ways. First, it automates billing, customer care and exception management. Second, it orchestrates smart charging, vehicle-to-grid (V2G), battery dispatch and heat pump optimisation across more than 30,000 devices, shifting load to clean, low-cost windows and reducing reliance on fossil-fuel peaking generation. Third, it enables retailers to launch new low-carbon propositions in as little as 19 days.

Recognising that AI systems carry their own energy and water costs, Kaluza has architected the platform to minimise unnecessary compute, running inference on pre-trained models rather than continuous retraining and co-locating intelligence with existing cloud infrastructure. Load is shifted to periods of clean energy availability wherever possible. The platform processes 5,000 API events per second with zero downtime, handling 24 million data points daily across its client base.

The results

Kaluza’s AI capabilities are delivering measurable, audited outcomes. On customer operations, AI-powered support tools have driven a 27% reduction in customer contacts and a 23% improvement in first-contact resolution, with Net Promoter Score improving by +39 across millions of customer accounts. Operational overhead has been reduced by up to 33%, and CRM and contact centre costs have been cut by £5m annually for individual clients.

On energy optimisation, the platform manages more than 200MW of flexible load and optimises 180GWh of flexible energy annually – equivalent to powering more than 20,000 homes for a year – while delivering more than £100 in value per customer per year through intelligent demand shifting. The world’s first and largest residential V2G programme, run with OVO Energy and Nissan, demonstrated 45% carbon savings compared with unmanaged charging, with customers earning up to £960 per year. Across its client base, the platform delivers £130m in annual technology cost savings.

Kaluza’s 2030 ambitions are 100 million contracted meters and 10GW of flexible load, which it says are achievable if more retailers decommission legacy systems and the market continues its shift away from monolithic CIS platforms. Future applications include whole-home energy management, trading optimisation and retailer-agnostic flexibility markets, enabling any device, on any tariff, with any retailer, to contribute to grid balance.

Runners up

BiofuelAi

Building an AI Platform to Modernise the Biogas Industry

BiofuelAi Ltd has built a software platform pairing physics-based modelling with machine learning to help biogas and anaerobic digestion operators forecast plant performance. Most UK sites still rely on spreadsheets and operator judgement, so the consequences of daily feedstock decisions are not visible for days. The platform recommends blends that maximise gas yield while keeping digesters stable, and works alongside existing monitoring systems. Across pilots at several commercial UK plants, BiofuelAi reports carbon reductions of up to 28% per site, partly through yield increases of up to 15%, and profit improvements of £300,000 to £500,000. Reaching 360 sites by 2030 is a target.

ClearVue

ClearVUE.IRIS: Energy Intelligence, Engineered for a Net-Zero Future

ClearVUE.IRIS is an analytics capability within ClearVUE's energy management platform that examines electricity, gas and water data recorded at one-minute intervals to find avoidable consumption. It looks for out-of-hours demand, high baseload, scheduling drift and unusual load patterns, quantifies each finding in kilowatt-hours, cost and carbon, then converts it into a tracked task with an owner, deadline and verification record. The tool is used across more than 200 portfolios in 15 countries and 21 sectors, with 16.5GWh of avoidable annual consumption identified, worth £3.97m and 4,115 tCO2e, averaging 15.3% per estate.

ENGIE UK

Orus

Orus is an optimisation platform developed in-house by ENGIE UK to trade battery storage automatically across multiple electricity markets. It aggregates asset telemetry and market data, runs continuous optimisation cycles, and bids autonomously into intraday and day-ahead platforms including EPEX, Nord Pool, the GB Balancing Mechanism and ancillary services markets, operating around the clock with anomaly detection and fail-safe controls. ENGIE UK states that better dispatch of storage assets improves system efficiency and supports greater use of intermittent renewable generation, reducing reliance on fossil-fuelled plant.

GridBeyond

FlexPilot

GridBeyond's FlexPilot is an AI platform that helps industrial, commercial and utility-scale energy users optimise how they consume and trade electricity. It combines machine learning, digital twin modelling and automated control, forecasting site demand, market prices and operating constraints up to seven days ahead with what GridBeyond reports as over 90% accuracy. The platform shifts load into cheaper, lower-carbon periods, manages battery charging and discharging, and automates participation in demand-side response, ancillary services and wholesale trading. Deployments have reduced costs and Scope 2 emissions without affecting production. The system operates across both behind-the-meter and grid-connected assets.

Sirio Multilateral Strategies

AI Triangulation Tool

Sirio Multilateral Strategies Ltd has developed a tool that consolidates an energy network's stakeholder engagement records into one searchable base, then uses AI to cluster feedback by topic and viewpoint. Great Britain's networks must evidence that billions of pounds of investment reflects customer priorities, a process known as triangulation that has traditionally been done manually by external consultants. Every output of the tool cites its source, making conclusions auditable for Ofgem. The tool is in live use with GB electricity and gas networks. One distribution network has saved £120,000 a year in third-party reporting costs, freeing five staff from a day a week each.

Wattstor

Podium Energy Management System

Podium is Wattstor's energy management platform for commercial and industrial sites, a segment the company describes as poorly served because every site has a different demand profile, asset mix and grid constraint. Rather than simply monitoring equipment, Podium uses forecasting and automation to optimise on-site generation, battery storage and electricity purchasing in real time, drawing on site demand, weather forecasts, market prices and asset performance. It also underpins Wattstor's Price Protect tariff, combining management, optimisation, supply and billing in one contract. At Icknield Biogas, coordinating a 1.2MW solar array and 2.4MWh battery, Wattstor reports up to a 70% reduction in reliance on grid electricity.
